A drought tolerant grass which prefers well drained soil in full sun. This is a great choice for erosion control or soil stabilization as it is a clump forming grass which tolerates a wide range of well drained soils. Purple spikelets (flowers) form on one side of the stem in summer attracting birds. Spikelets turn tan-coloured and resemble oats in the fall, and the foliage turns purple and red.
Plant with spring flowers as this grass is a warm season grass, staying short in the spring. Pairs well with Prairie Smoke, Purple Echinacea, Butterfly Milkweed, or Little Bluestem.
