Originally called "Craneberry" because of the interesting shape of the small, white and pink flowers (appearing in late spring to early summer), which look much like the head of a crane. A low-growing evergreen with glossy green leaves, which is usually grown in bog-like conditions. Requires full sun, with medium to moist but well-draining, acidic soils.
Leaves turn reddish purple in the winter months. Can be used as an alternative ground cover, only if used in locations without foot traffic. Maturing in August-November, the berries are edible but sour and are often combined with sugar when cooked or juiced for a delicious result!
Please note that similar to the Lowbush Blueberry this plant is fairly sensitive and does require low pH soil to thrive. Due to the complex needs of this plant, it is likely best suited to experienced gardeners with ideal growing conditions.
