Patridgeberry (Mitchella repens) is a shade-loving, evergreen ground cover trailing up to 12 feet long. It grows slowly, and is best to plant around other non-competitive plants. Oval glossy dark green leaves grow in pairs along the stems. White flowers with some pink appear in pairs in the spring on the stem ends. This species has attractive red berries that stand out in the winter time. The berries are edible but not very tasteful. It does well under trees, as well as alongside rock edges, ponds, and border gardens where the soil stays consistently moist.
