Attract Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly to your garden by planting a Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) in your yard! Swallowtail larvae survive on the leaves of this shrub. A large 5-7 foot tall shrub that has sweet-scented leaves, eye-catching fruit, and beautiful fall colours. It grows in shade and moist soil. The twigs, fruit, and leaves of this shrub can make a fragrant tea. Tea from the twigs is traditionally used to treat colds and colic. Spicebush is sometimes called the "forsythia of the wild" because it blooms very early with dainty yellow flowers that attract butterflies and other insects.

Please note: Spicebush is dioecious, meaning you should have both female and male plants in your yard if you are looking for berries. Unfortunately, we won't know whether a plant is male or female at the time of shipping because we won't see the blooms. You can order more than one plant to increase your chances, and wait until blooms appear in the second or third growing season.

Other common names: Northern Spicebush, Allspice
