Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a berry producing shrub that is well suited to wet, poorly drained soils. Berries are a vibrant red and remain on the plant after the foliage has fallen. The berries are not edible. It is attractive when grown as a hedge or as multiple plants in clumps together. We encourage you to buy several of these plants if you desire to see its berries, due to its dioecious nature (containing only male or female reproductive characteristics). Winterberry needs one male and one female to produce fruit, and they cannot be sexed until they flower, which happens later in a few seasons from now.
