Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is one of Ontario's most adaptable ferns, with bright, lime green fronds to help create a beautiful, tropical-looking ground cover for your shady garden areas. It will also spread slower than some other ferns and will not overtake your garden. It has beautiful upright leaves clumped in groups that form a compact look.
Although Lady Fern will tolerate heavy shade, it can also tolerate occasional drought and some sunlight (if kept moist). It prefers partial shade and consistent moisture. Plant in moist soil rich in organic matter and away from strong winds. Ensure enough watering is provided during the hot summer months. Lady Ferns serve as a great shelter for birds and small animals and are rabbit resistant.
