The Dwarf Chinkapin Oak's (Quercus prinoides) exhibits fast growth once established, but will only grow to around 15 feet high. This species also has an early and abundant acorn production. At around 3-5 years you will see increased growth, and the oak will begin to produce acorns. To produce acorns, this tree needs another Dwarf Chinkapin Oak for pollination.
Home to many insects, its acorns are a food source for many species of birds and other wildlife. It can be found in dry, rocky, or sandy soils along roadsides, hillside pastures, and barren slopes. This oak can tolerate some shade when young, but is best planted in open sunny locations. Ensure to plant away from taller trees that can impact the light that reaches it.
