Chinkapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) yields sweet edible acorns, which attract Blue Jays. This species is a smaller, more urban-friendly alternative to our previously offered, Bur Oak. It maintains dark, rich green leaves all season until late September. Although this is not a showy species, it is a nice green tree. It is less messy than other oaks as the leaves and acorns are smaller. It requires full sun but can tolerate some shade when young, and it grows best in well-drained soils but will tolerate wet conditions. This oak has the ability to withstand harsh conditions and is very drought tolerant.
