Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica) boasts healthy, dark green foliage with a nice scent. This species stays a rich green in the hottest and driest summer months and is a nice native alternative to Boxwoods. The waxy berries are a unique ornamental feature in the fall and early winter and New Englanders use the berries to make candles. It is usually found in groupings or thickets bordering woods and does best in full sun, medium to moist soil, and clay to sandy loam. Bayberry attracts birds and is both drought tolerant and deer/rabbit resistant.
