The only apple tree native to Ontario, the Sweet Crab Apple (Malus coronaria) boasts beautiful white and fragrant flowers with pink streaks that grow in clusters of 2 to 3 during spring. Pollinated by a wide variety of bees, this tree's fruit is a food source for many species. It grows best in full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Found around Lake Erie and throughout southern Ontario, this tree thrives in moist, well draining soil. Since the apples are too bitter to eat raw, they can be used in preserves and ciders.
