Try out this low maintenance species in your garden! You will find it tolerant of a wide range of light, soil, and moisture conditions. Unlike Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis), Thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana) will not spread as rapidly and will grow taller. Thimbleweed has long leaf stalks (petiole), while Canada Anemone has none. In summer you will enjoy beautiful white flowers with green centres, becoming thimble shaped seed clusters in late summer. An architectural delight for both humans and pollinators. Leaves are whorled halfway up the tall slender stem.
Please note that Thimbleweed can be toxic to insects and mammals and produces chemicals that can inhibit growth of neighboring plants. While beneficial to promote easy growth in your garden, this competition may pose a challenge in a smaller growing space. Find this plant naturally in a rocky or dry woodland habitat.
