Fast growing and low maintenance, Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) will thrive at the back of your woodland garden bed or as a natural hedge. Be aware that this plant can spread quickly through rhizomes and self-seeding, so consider the planting location appropriately. Grows up to 5 feet with a 4 foot spread. Deadheading finished blooms can decrease self-seeding. It is best planted in a shaded garden in most moisture conditions and is drought tolerant.
Enjoy Snakeroot’s smooth stemmed clumps with lovely heart shaped leaves that culminate to multiple branches of fluffy, dense white flower clusters. These late season flowers provide valuable pollen and nectar for butterflies, moths, bees, and flies.
Another important note is that this plant is toxic to livestock and the toxicity can be passed to humans through the livestock’s milk.
