Description

We are excited to offer this unique Sumac species that grows to a similar height to Staghorn Sumac, but is taller than Fragrant Sumac. Grows well in part shade to full sun in well drained sandy or loam soil. Male and female flowers bloom on separate trees in the Spring (Dioecious shrub – See note below). Flowers become maroon brown berries in fall and become an important winter food source for birds and mammals. Fall also brings a beautiful display of red and orange leaves.

This shrub can be a very quick growing plant as it spreads by root suckers to form larger colonies. Plant where significant space is available. Great option to stabilize slopes or naturalized areas.

*Please note that Winged Sumac is dioecious, meaning you should have both female and male plants in your yard if you are looking for berries. Unfortunately, we won’t know whether a plant is male or female at the time of shipping because we won’t see the blooms. You can order more than one plant to increase your chances, and wait until blooms appear in the second or third growing season.
