The only Magnolia native to Canada, and also the hardiest. Yellow-green tulip-like flowers grace the top of these magnificent trees in late spring to early summer. The flower buds and flowers are edible and it is possible that they may have been a minor food source for First Nations peoples. Flowers are only produced after the tree has matured to 12 years of age and turn to fruits that begin green (cucumber-like – note the name) and end red, which feed ground-feeding birds and small mammals.

Grows best in moist, well-draining loams which are rich in organic matter, in full sun to part shade. Growing up to 70 feet in height, this tree requires a large landscape, but makes an excellent shade tree when it has enough room to spread out.
