Shrub known for its colourful red branches, especially prominent on new growth. Prune old or dead branches in the spring to stimulate new growth. Tolerates a variety of soils from sandy to clay but prefers rich, fertile soil that is consistently moist. Commonly used as a border shrub and looks especially sharp against an evergreen background.
