Christmas Fern (Polystichum arcostichoides) is a hardy, evergreen fern that will become a friendly companion to your other native shade-lovers.
Very similar to the Marginal Wood Fern, this easy-to-maintain fern can also tolerate somewhat drier soils than most other ferns. The Christmas Fern has impressive silver-coloured fiddleheads in early spring and does not only offer protection to local wildlife but is also a food source for some animals like ruffed grouse. Plant in slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Add only a thin layer of mulch to avoid crown rot. Ensure enough watering is provided during the hot summer months.
