The highlight of this species is an attractive drooping flower head which turns from red into yellow. It provides nectar in early spring to hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. The mature size of this species depends on the quality of soil, though it is easily started in a variety of soil types. It grows nicely around rock gardens and is one of the first perennials to bloom in the spring. Deer and rabbit resistant.
